Westfalia bags UAE President Cup Trophy in Moscow

Westfalia, trained by Logvin V.N and owned by Kurasov V.V, was superbly ridden by jockey Khatkov S.A to win the Emirates Equestrian Federation’s HH The President of the UAE Cup (Group 1) Moscow Derby in Moscow on Saturday, August 15, 2009.

The four-year-old grey mare registered her fifth and Terskiy Stables picked up the winning cheque of 377, 500 Russian roubles for the victory in a seven-horse field.

Westfalia registered a three-and-a-half length win over Burger, trained by Rogozenko S.N and ridden by Kruglikhin with the Derov A.H-trained Bagrein ridden by Ivanskoy in third place.

Khatkov on Westfalia registered a time of 3 minutes 01.80 seconds for the 2400-metre race, which has been a regular feature at Moscow. With Sunday’s Derby Win, Westfalia now boasts of a record of five wins and
three second-place finishes in her nine career starts.

The Moscow Derby, which carried a prize money of 755,000 Russian roubles, was held along with the Abu Dhabi Stakes, also for Purebred Arabians.

Karmel de Faust lived up to his favourite status by winning the 1600-metre Abu Dhabi Stakes earlier in the day. The French-bred Karmel de Faust, trained by Derov A.K and ridden by Ivanskoy, added to his eight wins in 11 starts and was a class apart. Karmel de Faust’s winning time was 1:56.30.

Karmel won by six lengths from Pays, trained by Samokhina O.S and ridden by Melekhov V.V.

The 7-year-old Drager gained a place for the 20th time in 19 times 24 starts finishing third under jockey Avidzba in the 155,000 Russian Roubles’ race.

The races were attended by the UAE Ambassador to Russia, several dignitaries, businessmen and Arabian horse lovers.

Taleb Dhaher Al Muhairi, Secretary General, Emirates Equestrian Federation, who distributed the trophies along with the UAE Ambassador to Russia, said it was moment of great joy for the Federation to see the Arabian horses running on Moscow soil. "I am completely overwhelmed by the response of Muscovites for the Arabian racing. With constant support from the Moscow Hippodrome officials and the ever-enthusiastic fans, it makes our job easier to return to the same venue every year."

Saturday’s HH The President of the UAE Cup (Group 1) Moscow Derby was the fourth - after Chantilly in France and Newmarket and Ascot in the United Kingdom - in the 2009 series being organized by the Emirates Equestrian Federation. The series will conclude in October with a race in Baden Baden, Germany.
